Timeline Visualization for OFR cases

As part of my role with the Wisconsin Overdose Fatality Review (OFR) project, I facilitated the collection and management of various data which were used to review and better understand overdose fatality cases. This included various data points for the decedent including hospital interactions, controlled-substance prescriptions recorded by Wisconsin's prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP), emergency medical services (EMS) interactions, and other data collected by the OFR program such as substance-use treatment and criminal justice involvement.

Often times, this required reviewing an overwhelming amount of data. Using open-source tools like R's ggplot package, I automated the production of visual timelines for each OFR case reviewed. These timelines helped identify patterns in controlled-substance prescribing, hospital interactions, gaps in services, and other life events that may have precipitated the overdose fatality. Data in this timeline has been scrambled in order to protect the privacy of individuals.
